Monique Chelin
Monique Chelin is an Australian company director and sustainability strategist, with a track record across mining and resources, large-scale property and infrastructure, renewable energy, enterprise transformation and childcare.
In 2010, Monique founded MJC Sustainability, building a practice that integrates disciplined project management with pragmatic sustainability to maximise long-term shareholder value. The firm has supported multinational clients including Vodafone, BHP Billiton, Anglo American, Qantas and Virgin Airlines on significant capital projects (often >US$500 million). Her team’s work spans desert-compatible renewable technologies and sustainable master planning for large communities of 500,000+ residents, through to executive training and culture programs that translate sustainability into competitive advantage.
Before founding MJC Sustainability, Monique held management roles across Africa, Asia and the Middle East with Iscor Mining (now Mittal Steel Ltd and Kumba Resources), Australasian Resource Consultants, GHD, PwC, and Nakheel PJSC in Dubai. At Nakheel, she helped develop and implement corporate sustainability strategy and climate action plans for major property and joint-venture portfolios, contributing to energy efficiency initiatives, LEED community, and early trials of emerging technologies, work that informed elements of the Dubai Green Building Standards. Earlier, as a geologist, environmental manager and senior consultant, she delivered environmental impact assessment and management services across the Asia-Pacific, grounding her boardroom advice in hands-on technical and operational experience.
In 2011, Monique established TheGreenShop, curating eco-luxury apparel and sustainable design for retail and wholesale customers in Australia. The brand reflects her long-standing commitment to circularity, fair trade and responsible sourcing, and has included initiatives such as Yogathe (organic cotton and bamboo) and TanzaBlu (Australian-made luxury soy candles).
Monique is an AICD-qualified director who advises at the highest level on strategy, risk and capital allocation, helping boards embed sustainability as a driver of growth rather than a compliance exercise.
Beyond the boardroom, she is a noted speaker on sustainable business and high-performing project cultures, and the author of Switch it On! Activate Your Personal Potential, and Enzo Finds His Friends, a children’s book that raises funds for animal welfare. Since 2010, Monique has been an Ambassador for Opportunity International Australia, championing microfinance as a practical pathway out of poverty. She also actively supports several other initiatives that advance inclusive economic participation, environmental stewardship and animal welfare.
